Dahlberg honors the origins of Santa Lucia

For the 49th year in a row Dahlberg has celebrated St. Lucia’s Day,  a date in the Swedish holiday calendar that the company, founded by Kjell Dahlberg, has been commemorating every 13rd December since 1974.

St Lucia’s Day is a deeply rooted tradition in Swedish culture. The saint, known as the Bringer of Light, is celebrated on the darkest day of the year, 13rd December, taking part of the build-up for the Christmas celebrations. Kjell Dahlberg started the tradition in the nautical company he founded in Mallorca almost half a century ago. Every year since then, Dahlberg has served to its friends and employees a breakfast with typical Swedish products of the season such as “glögg” a popular and comforting mulled wine, and ‘kanelbullar’, cinnamon buns baked by Margarita Dahlberg according to a family recipe passed down from her grandmother. The company also buys ‘pepparkakor’, delicious ginger biscuits, from the Swedish Church.

As per tradition, friends, customers and employees are invited to visit Dahlberg throughout the day to celebrate St. Lucia and taste these typical treats.

“It is a tradition that we do every year. At first it was my father’s way of paying tribute to his country, his roots. Over time, and especially after he passed away, it took on a greater meaning as it became a recognition of the company’s origins” says Margarita Dahlberg, who expects that “next year’s St. Lucia Day will be even more special, as Dahlberg will be celebrating its 50th anniversary”.
